The Minister for Ageing, Ken Wyatt, recently announced the extension of the Partners in Culturally Appropriate Care (PICAC) program for a further 12 months.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank Minister Wyatt for the continuing recognition of the value and achievements of the PICAC program and his ongoing support.  The PICAC program is a national government initiative across all states and territories, providing information, resources and training in the aged and community care sector in Australia.

The PICAC Alliance members met in Sydney during the CALDWays 2018 Conference: the Multicultural Workforce, to discuss national priorities and objectives to further support the sector with ongoing aged care reforms and CALD initiatives for the next 12 months and into the future.

“By drawing on the collective experiences of the organisations currently delivering the PICAC programs in each state and territory, and our close links with CALD community groups, we have continued to make significant and targeted impact on inclusive service delivery, aged care policy and informed better practice for older people from CALD backgrounds”, the PICAC Alliance Secretariat, Ms Rosa Colanero said.

The PICAC Alliance is a collaborative national body comprised of each state and territory specific PICAC organisations and aims to be a voice and discussion conduit into information, training and resources to inform aged and community care service delivery of tomorrow so that:

  • Older people from diverse backgrounds and their carers can better navigate through aged and community care services
  • The national PICAC program has been funded by the Australian Government since 1998 to equip aged care service providers in the delivery of culturally appropriate care to older people from CALD backgrounds.
  • Consultation and empowerment of older people and their carers remain a priority
  • Programs are inclusive, reflective of and responsive to all people with broad diversity of knowledge, experience, needs and expectations
  • Delivery of appropriate services is informed and targeted
  • Advocacy on issues and priorities is coordinated combining the national outcomes-based perspectives with state and regional specific relevance
  • Capacity of organisations to upskill staff and raise awareness of emerging trends and issues is strengthened and enhanced

PICAC Alliance member organisations include the Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing (VIC), Council on the Ageing Inc. (NT), Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland Ltd – trading as Diversicare (QLD), Fortis Consulting (WA), Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania (TAS), Multicultural Aged Care Inc (SA) and Multicultural Communities Council of Illawarra Inc.
